Nandi Excursion

The Singaloreans decided to something different this Sunday. So we hired a 12-seater van and headed out to Nandi Hills.

The hill is 65 Kms from Bangalore and 1,478 meters above sea level is Bangalore's own hill station. However, there is such a dearth of amenities at the top that it is a far cry from the much better developed Ooty. It was Tipu Sultan's summer retreat and Tipu's fort walls still stand as testimony to history. A flight of 1.175 steps lead from the base of the hills to the top.

We were probably the most 'kiasu' people on the hilltop. We had absolutely delicious fried noodles and Singapore chicken curry lovingly preapared by Marge and Sharon. The guys had filled an entirely cooler box full of the essential accompaniments of Barcardi Breezers, Kingfisher and various other 'lubricants', which no Singalorean get-together can be without. It was no wonder we attracted the local inhabitants; yes, the monkeys and stray dogs. One of the monkeys was actually brave enough to snatch a packet of biscuits from right under my nose when I wasn't watching.

After a quick lunch, we decided to take a walk to check out the perimeter wall. The Tipu's Drop, a 600 meter high cliff, where prisoners were hurled down the precipice is an awe-inspiring sight.

By evening time, some visitors had been sufficiently inebriated to attempt to ride some tufts of grass growing out of the side of the rock face.

We thought we might be able to catch the sunset before heading off. Alas, the clouds got in the way. But we were rewarded with some lovely God-beams though.

The drive downhill was uneventful as most of us napped while the driver took us through the 40 odd curves and unlit roads to finally deliver us to Vittal Mallya Road. Sunny's seemed a perfect was to end the excursion. Perfect also in the sense that most of us made it home just in time to catch the Man U-Chelsea draw in the EPL showdown.
