After weeks of plotting and scheming, well not quite, the big day had arrived. Yes, Chris was turning 50.

We all thought we should put in a little effort to indulge his passion. Football, especially Manchester United. This was truly a Singalorean effort that required espionage and globetrotting skills to pull off. OK, it just involved Margaret telling us if he had the particular jersey and what size... and Sam happened to be in Singapore to pick it up.

What timing as well. Margaret managed to pick up all the ingredients for the superb meal from Singapore, and she didn't even have to lie on the Customs form, since we were still using the old ones. You can well imagine how one would indulge, given three different types of
poh piah, on top of the
paiti cups. And that was for tea. Dinner was hokkien mee with the excellent sambal chilli.

Jonathan and Ternasser even made it directly from the airport. Jonathan bearing the delicious and appropriate 'longevity peaches' and Terna provided with a running commentary regarding her progress through immigration, customs, baggage claim, missing driver via SMS, all the while proclaiming 'low bat'.

We finally left at 20 to midnight. In Singapore time, well and truly into his birthday already. We shall leave the Chias to their own private celebration when the clock struck 12 in India.
