Kitsch? ...Hardly

Some of the Singaloreans are in town again, for a limited engagement only. Jonathan and Ser Joo leave on Friday for their holiday to Eastern Europe for 3 weeks. (Green with envy here.) I will be away for two weeks from 16Sep as well, a week’s course in Singapore followed by a week in South Korea with my family, to celebrate my mother’s 70th birthday. Margaret will only be back next week. So it looks like the next time we are all together will be for the moon cake festival.

We decided to have dinner at Cosmo Village. I was greeted by dim candlelight when I arrived. How romantic, right? Not really. They’ve not had power for an hour already and were promised by the BTSC that it would be up again shortly. Ya, right.

Danny was on duty tonight behind the bar, sporting his new ‘Karen’ tattoo right above his clavicle. No special drinks tonight, just a boring old Kingfisher.

It was funny that the lack of light in the kitchen meant that some dishes like the Penang curry were not available. I guess the paste had to be made from scratch and that would not have been possible with the proper lighting. Fortunately, the power did return by about 8.30 pm and we actually got what we wanted, after sending our waiter back and forth.

Despite a reminder to the kitchen to make the Tom Yum more authentic, i.e. more spicy and more sour, the chef obviously did not trust that we would know the difference. Sharon had to ask for more lime to be brought to the table. The pork vindaloo and the two lamb curries were however excellent, meaning that we had to order more rice for HL (there’s a running joke that he always needs more rice.)

We decided to finish dinner and go check out Olive Beach. They had a “Kistchy @ O” event on and quite a few of the party crowd were going to be there. It was definitely more interesting than the usual flea market night.

We got there about 10 pm, just in time for the second ‘fashion walk’. The space inside was quite small, so it was expected but still funny when the staff came round to tuck people in, against the wall that is, to make room for the models to walk through.

It was pretty much another fashion show but I thought the models were not quite so pretty. One actually wasn't even doing the proper model walk.

There was a certain degree of kitsch but I did wish there was more though. There was no kitsch in the fashion, not on the models and not on any of the guests. I guess it would take a lot for anyone to be able to pull off the look and not be ridiculed.

And of course when we go to Olive Beach, cocktails become the order of the day or night. Appletini was the choice this time and some of the Keppelites opted for Corona.

They managed to get a really good crowd. I guess that was the reason they stretched the closing a little and by the time we left, it was actually past midnight.
